When my friend & co-worker Mark Svartz and I were on Google Maps and scratching our chins about what to be for Halloween, it suddenly dawned on us—we would be the little Street View guy you use to see into the windows of strangers all throughout the world.

But we didn’t want to end it there. We needed it to be fully-functional, so we decided to add a nerdy element to an already hypergeeky idea. To be just like the Street View guy, people would need to be able to track us on a map and actually see our honest-to-goodness “Street View” (which would physicalize itself as a live UStream from iPhones in our pockets). We pulled Mags Chau onto the project to make this nerd’s wet dream come true. Thus, Google Street Boo was born.

Tom Haverfoods is a single-serving site born from a conversation between myself and my friend Sami. After watching a hilarious clip of Aziz Ansari on the hit NBC sitcom, Parks & Recreation, we thought it would be fun to expand the idea and make new ones.

With the help of a couple others, we compiled a huge list and I got the site up—all within 24 hours of the idea.

Within 2 hours of its launch, it was tweeted by Aziz Ansari himself, as well as featured on many popular sites like New York Magazine, BuzzFeed, Entertainment Weekly, and Urban Outfitters. But, possibly the coolest is both Aziz & Amy Poehler talking about it on the red carpet.

The site has received over 1 million visits to which 16 million Haverfoods have been served.

In the second class of The Barn (the first having made Dating Brian), the brief had been altruistically altered to “Do something good, famously.” And with that, a crack team of three interns, and a little spice from elsewhere, Underheard in New York was born.

Starting as wanting to do something for the homeless population of NYC, the idea focused itself on giving them a voice—and what’s better for giving a normally ignored population a voice? The web. But, with no homes, these disenfranchised citizens have no computers, so it was decided—with prepaid cell phones, they would be able to tweet their experiences, reaching a mass audience. That is, if there were people willing to listen.

Listen they did.

Over 15,000 total people followed the four chosen for the project in just three weeks, while numerous media outlets (New York Times, BBC, LA Times, CNN, CBS, and Mashable, to name a few) picked up the story.

But more importantly (for the brief, and for mankind), there was measurable success for the four Underheard: a job offer, a paid transit fine, and even the reunion of one and his daughter. Not to mention the thousands of tweets of support that poured in.

As part of the first ever group of The Barn, BBH‘s internship program, we were tasked to “make something famous.” It could’ve been anything—a product, a trend, something made up—we just had to get it into the public spotlight.

We ended up deciding on helping me, newly out of a long-term relationship and brand new to NYC, get a date. Well, not just one—thirty. In thirty days. But, I couldn’t do it myself, so we recruited the internet at large to help me out. Girls (or their friends) applied to date me online, I kept a video diary of it all, and people gave me tips on Facebook, Twitter, and even in person a couple of times when they recognized me.

Our project and my lack of a dating life was featured on The Daily News, Mashable, NPR, and lots of other press as well.

I still update the Twitter from time to time as my dating alter ego, so feel free to follow me if you want to witness how a dork from WI dates in NYC in realtime.

Go Vote Absentee was an incredibly successful get-out-the-absentee-vote project for the 2008 election year spearheaded by my good friend and accomplice, Sam Oliker-Friedland. Acting as Creative Director, I designed the identity of the company as well as the entire design of the website. My goal as designer was to create a site that was incredibly easy and quick to use—something that was previously never heard of in absentee voting.

Go Vote Absentee received over 250,000 unique visitors, was featured on venues such as MTVu, and ended up being the margin of difference in the Minnesota Senate election.
